Total solar eclipse of Aug 2, 2027: where to see it

Greatest eclipse Aug 2, 10:06 AM UTC · the Moon's shadow is on Earth from 7:30 AM to 12:40 PM UTC

The Moon will cover the Sun completely along a path about 257 km wide across Morocco, Spain, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia. It lasts longest, 6 min 27 s, in Egypt, at 25.5°N, 33.2°E.

For thousands of kilometres either side of the path, people will see a partial eclipse: a bite out of the Sun.

Only the minutes of totality are safe to watch without eclipse glasses; the partial phases never are.

Watch it on the globe The Moon's shadow crossing the Earth in 3D, sped up.

or pick a place:

Watching safely

  • Never look at the Sun without eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer that meets the ISO 12312-2 standard, even when most of it is covered. Sunglasses are not enough.
  • Don't look through a camera, binoculars or a telescope without a proper solar filter over the front, even while wearing eclipse glasses: they concentrate the light and can burn your eye in an instant.
  • Only once the Sun is completely covered, inside the path of totality, can you take your glasses off. Put them back on as soon as the first bright point of the Sun returns.
  • No glasses? Poke a small hole in a card and let the sunlight fall through it onto the ground: you'll see little crescents. The gaps between leaves do the same.

What you'll see

As the Moon covers more of the Sun, the light turns strange and shadows get sharp. In the last seconds, beads of sunlight flash along the Moon's edge, then the sky goes dark like late twilight. The brightest stars and planets come out, and the Sun's pearly outer air, the corona, appears around the black Moon. Then the light snaps back.

Outside the path, it's a partial eclipse: a bite out of the Sun that grows, then shrinks. Even 90% covered, the day only looks a little dim.

How we work this out: Astronomy Engine gives the Sun and Moon's exact positions, and we check the eclipse from every city and from points across the map. The edges of the path are found by stepping out from its centre until the eclipse stops being total. It's precise to the minute; hills and the Moon's uneven edge can move the very edges of the path, so check before you travel to one. This is the same math the Sky Globe uses to draw the shadow.
